On December 31, 2014, the Commonwealth of PA passed new laws governing those who volunteer with or in close proximity to minors. Due to the stringent new clearance requirements, we are taking the utmost care to ensure that all of our volunteers are in compliance. As of July 1, 2015, all new volunteers were required to follow these guidelines prior to beginning their volunteer hours, thus they are already in compliance. Volunteers, however, who started prior to July 1, 2015 were grandfathered for a year. The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has waived the fee for the Child Abuse History Clearance and PA State Police Criminal Background Check, meaning that the majority of volunteers will incur no charges to make these updates. Only volunteers who have lived outside of PA in the past 10 years will need to pay a one-time fee for the FBI Fingerprint Check.
In an effort to bring our Center into compliance and not jeopardize our accreditation, as of January 25, 2016, the following steps will be required when you come in to volunteer:
1) Every volunteer must annually complete a Volunteer Information Update Form. You may print it out and bring it with you, email it to Becky or fill one out on site.
2) Every volunteer should check with the NNNTRC office (via email to Becky, telephone or in person) to ensure that their clearances are in compliance: Child Abuse History Clearance (no charge), PA State Police Criminal Background Check (no charge) and, if required, FBI Fingerprint Check ($27.50). You will need to be brought into compliance if:
a. Your clearances are not current (must be dated within the last 60 months)
b. You do not have any clearances because they were not required for your position when you started at NNNTRC (i.e. barn & facility workers)
c. You are missing one or more required clearance (we used to accept alternate forms, but can no longer do so)
d. You have resided outside of PA in the past 10 years, and now are required to have an FBI Clearance, in addition to the PA Clearances
e. You do not have clearances because you recently turned 18 or will shortly
3) Volunteers NOT required to get the FBI Fingerprint Check must sign a Disclosure Statement, stating they have not committed certain violations out of state. You may print it out and bring it with you, email it to Becky or fill one out on site.
